The Champion Hurdle is a race that sees 14 horses take to the field. The clear favourite
It's always nice to find an underdog in an event like this but it's hard to mention the bookies favourite; that happens to be last year's winner, Honeysuckle. At this moment in time, she's odds on to record back to back Champion Hurdle glory. Here rider, Rachael Blackmore, has enjoyed a cracking year since the last Cheltenham Festival with the Grand National seeing her become the first woman to win that race. For Honeysuckle, it's been much quieter with plenty of rest time; she has, however, blown the cobwebs off in both November and February. She won both of those races.
Can last year's third placed horse make a name for itself?
Epatante was in Honeysuckle's shadow last year both in the Champion Hurdle, where she finished third, and a few weeks later at Punchestown where Honeysuckle again took the prize purse in a grade 1 hurdle race. Epatante has been well rested in 2022 but turned in a couple of impressive displays at the back end of 2021. She won in Newcastle in November and then won the Boxing Day meet at Kempton. Epatante could surprise a few with her odds likely to shorten ahead of the race.
A longshot
Quilixios can be backed at up to 40/1 (41.00) right now and whilst a win is unlikely there are reasons to fancy her. For one thing, she's trained by Henry de Bromhead. That's the same person that trains Honeysuckle. On top of that, she won the Triumph Hurdle last year and whilst she hasn't taken first place in her recent outings her last three have seen her finish third once and second twice.
