Result: Record-breaking Conseslus Kipruto wins Commonwealth Games gold

Olympic and world champion Conseslus Kipruto adds the Commonwealth Games title to his trophy cabinet with a Games-record time in the men's 3000m steeplechase.

Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto has won gold in the men's 3000m steeplechase final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The reigning Olympic and world champion took the lead on the final lap and was able to showboat his way over the finish line as he broke the Games record while adding the Commonwealth title to his growing list of accolades.

Kipruto's time of 8:10.08 beat the previous record - set by compatriot Jonathan Ndiku in Glasgow four years ago - by 0.36s as Kenya dominated the event to take all three medals.

Abraham Kibiwott was unable to chase down Kipruto in the closing stages of the race but did cross the line in second place to claim silver, while there was a dramatic contest behind him in the battle for third.

Canada's Matthew Hughes had looked set for a medal throughout the race, but he was overtaken in the final metres and could not rescue the bronze from Amos Kirui despite throwing himself over the line.

Hughes was visibly upset despite recording a season-best time, while behind him Uganda's Albert Chemutai set a new personal best of 8:19.89.

The Welsh duo of Jonathan Hopkins and Ieuan Thomas finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Northern Ireland's Adam Kirk-Smith crossing the line in eighth place.
