Result: Usain Bolt fourth fastest in Rio debut

Usain Bolt finishes fourth fastest in the 100m qualifiers as he makes his debut at the Rio Olympics.

Usain Bolt has made his debut at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, finishing fourth fastest in the qualifying round for the men's 100m semi-finals.

The six-time Olympic champion finished first in his heat with a time of 10.07s, five-hundredths of a second ahead of Bahrain's Andrew Fisher.

The time saw him rank fourth overall for the qualifiers, behind the USA's Justin Gatlin (10.01s), Cote d'Ivoire's Ben Youssef Meite (10.03s) and Canada's Andre de Grasse (10.04s).

Bolt's compatriot Yohan Blake was also comfortably into the next stage, winning his heat with a finish of 10.11s.

Team GB's James Dasaolu competed in the same heat as Bolt but managed to progress as a fastest loser, clocking a time of 10.18s, while teammate Chijindu Ujah was also through with a time of 10.13s.

James Ellington missed out on a chance to compete in the next stage, meanwhile, with a disappointing time of 10.29s only good enough for 40th place overall among the qualifiers.

The semi-finals and the final of athletics' showpiece event take place at Rio's Olympic Stadium tomorrow night.
