Seventh seed Marin Cilic eases through to the third round of the Cincinnati Open with a straight-sets win over Joao Sousa.

Marin Cilic has recorded a straight-sets win over Joao Sousa to progress through to the third round of the Cincinnati Open.

After losing his opening match in Montreal last week, Cilic needed an improved performance on Tuesday, and the Croatian delivered as he saw off his Portuguese opponent in 73 minutes.

The US Open champion broke twice on the way to taking the first set, and it was a similar story in the second as Sousa struggled to make an impact on his serve.

Cilic eventually ran out a 6-4 6-2 winner to move through to a last-16 tie with either Richard Gasquet or Thanasi Kokkinakis.
