Result: Great Britain pipped to podium in men's pair

Great Britain finish fourth in the men's coxless pairs final at the Rio Olympic Games, while New Zealand successfully defend their title.

Great Britain finished in an agonising fourth position in the men's coxless pairs final at the Rio Olympics this afternoon.

The duo of Alan Sinclair and Stewart Innes looked good for silver at one point, but couldn't hold off the challenges of South Africa and Italy in the closing stages of the race.

As a result, Great Britain once again missed out on their first rowing medal of the Games, with Italy claiming the final spot on the podium behind South Africa's silver.

New Zealand pair Hamish Bond and Eric Murray continued their dominance in the event by successfully defending their Olympic title, finishing well clear of the rest of the pack.

It was the team's 69th consecutive victory in the class, with their last defeat coming seven years ago in 2009.
