Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton says that he is "very proud" of the team after securing pole position for the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton has said that he is "very proud" of Mercedes after he clinched pole position for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix.

The Briton finished 0.3s ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg in qualifying at Monza to secure his first pole since May's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

The 2008 world champion told reporters: "I feel excited for tomorrow. I'm very proud of my guys on my side of the garage. They have been through the difficult times with me.

"They've done a remarkable job bouncing back, so we've done this as a team and it's great to have another 1-2 for the team.

"Free to race [with Rosberg], that's the decision so it continues as usual. I hope tomorrow will be good. It would be really good to get another 1-2 for the team. I hope we have some competition with [Williams's Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa], I think that would be great for the fans."

Hamilton did not finish the previous race in Belgium because of a collision with Rosberg, who leads the drivers' championship by 29 points.
