Premier League clubs rushed to strengthen their squads.

There was a busy end to the summer transfer window as Premier League clubs worked hard to bolster their squads.

Here, PA looks at five of the best deals done on deadline day.

1. Kieran Tierney

Arsenal's hectic summer continued as Kieran Tierney joined from Celtic in the closing moments of the window. The 22-year-old left-back had been trailed by Arsenal all summer and moves south for a fee reported to be £25million – a record for a Scotland international. With 12 Scotland caps and over 150 Celtic appearances under his belt, Tierney has the experience to slot straight into the Arsenal back four – an area the Gunners addressed even further with the even later signing of David Luiz.

2. Ryan Sessegnon

Tottenham matched Arsenal's endeavour across north London with a double swoop for Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso. Teenager Sessegnon, signed on a six-year deal from Fulham, is a player Spurs have tracked for some time and he will being ability and energy down the left flank. Lo Celso is also an exciting loan addition from Real Betis – and makes up for Spurs missing out on Juventus striker Paulo Dybala.

3. Andy Carroll

Eight and a half years after his record-breaking £35million move to Liverpool, Carroll was back in his native Newcastle and hoping the deal provides much more than sentimental value. The former England striker was released by West Ham at the end of last season and has signed an initial one-year deal. Whether he can be as successful as he was during his first spell on Tyneside depends on him putting a miserable run of injuries behind him. If he does, this could be some story.

4. Aaron Mooy

Brighton boss Graham Potter was determined to being some creativity to his new side and settled upon Huddersfield playmaker Mooy. The deal to bring the 28-year-old Australian to the south coast might only be a season-long loan, but it could prove a masterstroke with Brighton in need of more invention in the final third. Mooy was key to Huddersfield winning promotion to the Premier League in 2017, and scored seven goals in 65 top-flight appearances before the Terriers were relegated in May.

5. Danny Drinkwater

The England midfielder's big-money Chelsea move soon turned sour. Drinkwater and Chelsea never seemed a good fit and the 29-year-old made only five Premier League starts after switching to Stamford Bridge in a £35million deal in August 2017. But Burnley will have a serious upgrade in their midfield should Drinkwater, who has signed a short-term deal until the start of January, find the form which made him key to Leicester's Premier League title success in 2016.
