Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has paid tribute to the Spurs faithful after an "incredible" opening victory over Manchester City.

The South Korea captain led the Tottenham line in the absence of the unfit Harry Kane and scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute, cutting inside and firing a left-footed effort past Ederson.

Spurs welcomed supporters back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium en masse for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic, and Son hailed the fans who were singing his name after the full-time whistle.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Son said: "We want to start well. With the fans finally! I think it was an incredible performance. Everyone worked so hard to get the three points. Man City are currently the best team in the world so this means a lot for us.

"We miss them [the fans] a lot. Football is all about the fans and we played for them. It means a lot for me and for the team for them to come to the stadium and support us."

When asked about how the transfer speculation surrounding Harry Kane had impacted the team, Son responded: "We are all professional. We wanted to focus on this game no matter who is involved or not.

"Obviously Harry is so, so important for us. But let's see. Last season we didn't start well against Everton so we started well. I just want to enjoy this afterwards."

Tottenham now prepare for battle in the Europa Conference League against Pacos de Ferreira before Nuno Espirito Santo reunites with Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend.
