Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric says that Zinedine Zidane's squad rotation proved key in the club's success during the 2016-17 campaign.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has said that the fact Los Blancos "had a very big team" played a key role in their success in both La Liga and the Champions League last season.

Real Madrid wrestled La Liga away from Barcelona last term, while they also became the first team to successfully defend the Champions League in the modern era.

Head coach Zinedine Zidane became known for his squad rotation in the final months of the campaign, and Modric has said that the Frenchman should take big credit for making full use of the players available.

"Key to last season's double? We had a very big team. For me, the credit belonged to the coach," Modric told Marca. "He knew how to get the best out of every player, and that helped us a lot to reach the end of the season in top form. We were all at a high level.

"Last season was different to years gone by as we'd sometimes get a little tired at the end. Now with all these rotations... it also helped the coach because any player who entered the team did well and helped the team, so it was easier to do what Zidane wanted. They were the keys to winning the double."

Modric, 31, scored once in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last term.
