Malaga welcomed Porto in the second leg of their last-16 clash in the Champions League on Wednesday needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the opening leg.
A tight first period brought just the one goal as Isco levelled the tie at 1-1 with a curling effort in the latter stages of the half.
It got harder for Porto in the early stages of the second period when Steven Defour was dismissed for a challenge on Joaquin.
The match looked set for extra time as the final 10 minutes approached level at 1-1 in the tie, but Roque Santa Cruz sent Malaga into the quarter-finals with a header after 77 minutes.
