Iconic midfielder Paul Scholes may return to Manchester United in a behind-the-scenes position, according to a report.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is reportedly being lined up for an unexpected return to Old Trafford as part of the club's summer restructuring.

The Red Devils are preparing to shake things up behind the scenes ahead of next season, which will include a director of football being brought in and other new positions created.

According to Metro, Scholes's name is in the mix for one of the new roles, with his expertise in the make-up of United considered a major plus.

Scholes represented United more than 718 times over a two-decade spell, winning 11 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues among other major honours, and he has since spent time working as a director at Salford City and as manager of Oldham Athletic.

The 44-year-old lasted just 31 days as Oldham boss before stepping down last month because of a difference of opinion with the League Two club's owner.

Meanwhile, it has been widely reported that Mike Phelan - currently working as assistant manager to Old Gunnar Solskjaer - will take over as United's technical director in the summer.
