John Hartson claims that Louis van Gaal has failed as Manchester United manager following the club's exit from the Champions League at the group stage.

John Hartson has claimed that Louis van Gaal has failed as Manchester United manager after the Red Devils were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.

United conceded a late goal to lose 3-2 at Wolfsburg on Tuesday night, a result which, coupled with PSV Eindhoven's 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow, has resulted in them failing to progress to the latter stages of Europe's top club competition for only the second time in 11 years.

After the damaging exit, Hartson insisted that Van Gaal is living on reputation alone at Old Trafford and says that the club have failed to move forward since appointing the Dutchman as David Moyes's replacement.

"Manchester United fans came on the radio at the beginning of this game and said Louis van Gaal is building, he is putting the foundations down," Hartson told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I am sorry but I do not agree with that. I think that he is living on his reputation. Whatever he has done in the past at big clubs, he is not doing it at United.

"I do not think that they have gone forward from the David Moyes era. Louis van Gaal has had all that money to spend, and he has failed. They lost their very first game in the group, then failed to beat PSV at home, and only struggled to a win over Wolfsburg at home before tonight."

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table but now have not won any of their last four matches.
