Captain Wayne Rooney backs Manchester United to embark on a special period if they can win the FA Cup this season.

Wayne Rooney has insisted that Manchester United could be on to the "start of something special" if they can win the FA Cup this season.

The Red Devils booked their place in the final of the world's oldest cup competition yesterday evening thanks to a 2-1 victory over Everton.

If they can record another victory at Wembley next month, skipper Rooney has said that it could mark the start of a trophy-winning period.

"I think it's a great opportunity for us," the 30-year-old told the club's official website.

"There are a lot of young and new players in the dressing room for us so it could be a big day for us in the final and the start of something special for us, I hope."

United last lifted the FA Cup in 2004 thanks to a 3-0 win over Millwall.
