England manager Roy Hodgson heaps praise on the "fantastic" Marcus Rashford following his historic goalscoring debut in the 2-1 victory over Australia.

England manager Roy Hodgson has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford after the striker marked his international debut with a goal this evening.

The 18-year-old became the youngest player to ever score on their England debut with a goal after just 135 seconds of their 2-1 victory over Australia at the Stadium of Light this evening.

Hodgson believes that his performance is proof that the Manchester United man can cope with the rigours of international football, but would not be drawn on whether he has worked his way into his final 23-man squad for Euro 2016.

"It's fantastic - I'm pleased for him. He tired a bit but that's normal," the England boss to ITV Sport.

"What a debut. You asked if he was capable of dealing with the situation and I think we got a resounding yes.

"Let's wait and see [if he makes the squad]. I've got until Tuesday to name my squad but he wouldn't be out of place in anyone's 23."

Rashford, who was making his international debut in just his 19th senior football match, is now the third youngest player to have scored for England after Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.
