There will be plenty of Manchester United fans who believe that Michael Carrick is one of the most underrated players of the past decade, with the central midfielder flying under the radar somewhat during what has been an 11-year stay at Old Trafford.

Carrick has played just 34 times for his country, but he has been a key member of United's side since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, making 459 appearances for the club across all competitions and only twice appearing fewer than 40 times in a single campaign.

Carrick holds the rare distinction of winning every honour available to him in the English game following United's Europa League triumph in the season just finished - the 18th trophy of his Old Trafford career.

That medal haul includes five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, three League Cups and the 2008 Champions League, while he was also part of the squad which reached two more Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011.

The veteran midfielder will have at least one more year at the club having put pen to paper on a new deal in May, and it may not be until he hangs up his boots that he is truly appreciated by those outside Manchester.
