If Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister was Manchester United's defining centre-back partnership of the 1990s, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were their equivalent in the 2000s and 2010s.

Vidic joined for just £7m in January 2006 and it was soon clear to see that United had pulled off a bargain, with the Serbian defender quickly establishing himself in the first team alongside Ferdinand.

Vidic won three consecutive Premier League titles in his first three seasons with the club and went on to lift the trophy five times before leaving to join Inter Milan at the end of his contract in 2014.

By that time he had made exactly 300 appearances and picked up 15 trophies for the Red Devils, including the 2008 Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup crown later that year.

Vidic also helped United to the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals, which they lost against Barcelona on both occasions, and his departure from the club saw tributes flood in for one of their best defenders of the modern era.
