Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola brands referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz "a special guy" after City's defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has branded referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz "a special guy" after City's defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Lahoz wrongly disallowed Leroy Sane's goal in the first half at the Etihad Stadium, before Guardiola was sent to the stands by the referee as the players returned to the dressing rooms.

Referring to last season's Champions League, after an incident involving Sergio Aguero in City's game against Monaco, Guardiola said that the Spanish referee "likes to be different".

"I remember what happened last year," the manager told BT Sport. "It was 1-1 at home to Monaco when there was a clear penalty on Aguero and what should have been a red card, but [Lahoz] didn't call it.

"We went from a possible 2-1 lead to 2-1 deficit. These types of situations are very important. In the right moment we miss the right decisions.

"The referee is a special guy, he likes to be different. Whenever people see the things, he will decide the opposite."

City are next in action with a game against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
