England manager Roy Hodgson admits that his side were not ruthless enough throughout their ill-fated Euro 2016 campaign.

England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that his side were not ruthless enough throughout their Euro 2016 campaign.

England dominated all three of their group games but only managed three goals before crashing out at the hands of minnows Iceland in the last 16 on Monday.

Hodgson resigned in the immediate aftermath of the chastening defeat, but still believes that FA chief executive Martin Glenn can oversee a bright future for the team.

"We weren't ruthless enough. I thought box-to-box there were some good signs that Martin can take forward with this England team. We did not play well last night and I take full responsibility for that," Hodgson told reporters in his final press conference.

"There has been lots of questions through the tournament and I have answered them and it's up to you if you like those answers or not. I do understand that there will be fierce criticism of England for leaving the tournament at this early stage.

"One particularly bad game has caused a lot of damage to me personally, to the team and to the team going forward, because they've got a bridge to repair."

England have won just six knockout games at major international tournaments since winning the World Cup 50 years ago.
