Leon Goretzka's error after just 14 seconds saw the 28-time champions trail but the France winger's brace helped turn the tables.

Bayern Munich recovered from the shock of conceding a 14-second own goal to win 3-2 at Augsburg and narrow the gap on Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund to two points.

Leon Goretzka turned Philipp Max's low cross into his own net straight from kick-off as the struggling hosts, who started the day just three points off the relegation zone, got off to a flying start.

Bayern would be forced to come from behind again but two goals from Kingsley Coman and an early second-half strike from David Alaba ultimately saw them hang on for an unconvincing win.

The odds had seemed stacked against Augsburg before kick-off, as the hosts were without leading scorer Alfred Finnbogason who was injured in last weekend's 4-0 loss at Werder Bremen.

By contrast Bayern brought back keeper Manuel Neuer after a hand injury but any hopes of an easy night were shattered by the stunning opening move which put the hosts in front.

Bayern almost responded immediately, a Coman cross flashing behind Robert Lewandowski and just missing Serge Gnabry at the far post, but Neuer was soon called into action to save from the dangerous Max.

The visitors eventually settled down after their calamitous start, and pulled level on 15 minutes when Joshua Kimmich crossed from the right and Coman connected to sidefoot home at the far post.

But Augsburg were far from done and went back in front less than 10 minutes later. In an almost carbon copy of their opener, this time it was Ji Dong-won who met Max's cross from the left with a crashing volley past Neuer.

Augsburg keeper Gregor Kobel kept his side's slender lead intact with a brilliant save to deny Goretzka, before Lewandowski headed a right-wing corner from Kimmich against the bar.

Augsburg were far from done and could have extended their lead towards the end of the first period when Sergio Cordova flicked the ball into the path of Jonathan Schmid, whose shooting chance was taken away by a timely interception from Alaba.

Just when the hosts thought they had held out, Bayern snatched another equaliser in first-half injury time when Goretzka threaded the ball through to Coman, who slotted his second through Kobel's legs.

Bayern were in no mood to let their second chance slip and after Lewandowski had twice come close, they went in front for the first time on 53 minutes when Coman turned provider, flicking through to Alaba who scored from close range.

Augsburg responded well, with another Ji effort saved by Neuer before Reece Oxford headed inches over the bar from a Max free-kick.

Goretzka missed the chance to settle it when he was sent clean through in the 65th minute only to fire straight at Kobel, while Coman had the best late chance when his volley from a Kimmich corner was brilliantly saved.
