Netflix orders a third and fourth seasons of period drama Bridgerton before filming ends on the second.

Netflix has given the go-ahead to a third and fourth season of period drama Bridgerton, the streaming service has announced.

The early renewal of the hit series comes just weeks into production of season two, which is unlikely to be released before December at the earliest.

Season one of the regency-era show - from prolific producer Shonda Rhimes - dropped on the service on Christmas Day and quickly became Netflix's most-watched programme ever, reaching 82 million households in its first month.

Bela Bajaria, vp of global TV at Netflix, said: "Bridgerton swept us off our feet.

"The creative team, led by Shonda, knew the material and delivered a beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members.

"They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We're planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come."

News of the pickup follows confirmation that breakout star Rege-Jean Page will not be returning for the second season.
