Channel 4 commissions a documentary about Miriam Rivera, who starred in the controversial reality show There's Something About Miriam.

Channel 4 has commissioned a three-part documentary about Miriam Rivera, one of the original reality TV stars and a trans icon.

The Mexico-born star first gained notoriety for appearing in the controversial 2004 reality show There's Something About Miriam, which saw six men try to win her affections without being told that she was trans until the final episode.

After the show she went on to become one of the most prominent trans activists but tragedy struck in 2019 when she was found dead in an apparent suicide - although her husband insists that she was murdered.

Miriam: Death of a Reality Star will explore her life and death through interviews with those closest to her, home video footage and archive voiceover from Miriam herself.

"Miriam's story is a fable for the ages, not only shining a light on the perils of fame but our shifting attitudes to towards gender identity," said executive producer Colin Barr.

"This series is a chance to restore Miriam's reputation as a true pioneer who was ahead of her time but was made to pay a heavy price for it."

The documentary is expected to air on Channel 4 later this year.
