Rapper and actor DMX dies at the age of 50, a week after suffering a heart attack.

Rapper and actor DMX, known for hits including 'Party Up (Up In Here)', has died at the age of 50 in New York.

The star - real name Earl Simmons - was hospitalised a week ago after suffering a heart attack which left him with minimal brain activity as a result of being deprived of oxygen for almost 30 minutes.

In a statement, his family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.

"Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him.

"Earl's music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time."

The showbiz website TMZ reported that DMX's heart attack was brought on by an accidental drug overdose, although that has yet to be confirmed or denied by his representatives.

DMX - the first artist in history to have his first five albums go to the top of the Billboard chart - is survived by his 15 children.
