Simon Cowell is confirmed as a surprise new judge on the Israeli version of The X Factor.

Simon Cowell has been confirmed as a surprise new judge on the new season of The X Factor in Israel.

The show has been a mainstay of the ITV schedules in the UK for more than 15 years but was rested in 2020 amid flagging ratings - and the broadcaster has suggested that it now may not return at all, with a new series in 2021 already having been ruled out.

After an absence of three years, the Israeli version of the show will be back in 2021 for a fourth season with the inclusion of Cowell as head judge.

"Over the years The X Factor format has discovered amazing talents all over the world," he said. "I can't wait to see what Israel has to offer."

A statement from broadcaster Reshet 13 said: "This is the first time Simon Cowell is coming to judge in a country outside of the U.S. and Great Britain. This is a huge achievement for Israeli TV.

"Cowell is one of the biggest and most influential music figures in the world and his participation as a judge in the Israeli format provides an opportunity for international exposure for Israeli singers."

Cowell is expected to begin filming the show within the next few months alongside his commitments on Britain's Got Talent.
