A new drama series about the downfall of the News of the World is reportedly in the works.

A new drama series is reportedly in the works about the phone-hacking scandal that led to the downfall of the News of the World.

After 168 years, the Sunday newspaper released its final edition in July 2011 as a result of the scandal, which saw more than 100 people arrested and the head of Downing Street's comms department being jailed.

The revelations began after it emerged that the News of the World had hired a PI to hack the voicemail of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler - in the process exposing a practice that had seen the phones of numerous celebrities illegally accessed for the purpose of getting stories.

According to Variety, director Saul Dibb and writer Luke Neal are behind Thank You & Goodbye - named after the paper's final front page - and have exclusive access to the key journalists and investigators involved as they work on the scripts.

"This is simply one of the most important, gripping and richest stories of this century - and yet we still don't know even half of what really went on," said Dibb.

"I'm so excited we're able to tell it all for the first time in dramatic form, and from the point of view of the people at the heart of it: the band of so-called 'rogue reporters' who then blew the whistle on those that had instructed them and the industry at large."

The project does not yet have a broadcaster attached.
