The BBC announces a new two-part documentary looking at the life and career of the legendary Paul Gascoigne.

The BBC has announced a new two-part documentary about Paul Gascoigne made in conjunction with the man himself.

The 54-year-old former midfielder is one of the most fondly-regarded figures of English football and was an integral part of the Three Lions' successes in the 1990s.

Off the pitch, Gascoigne has suffered from mental health issues and alcoholism over the last two decades - problems which have played out publicly in the media.

Gazza will look back at his career through archive footage, private home videos and interviews, as well as exploring the extraordinary lengths the press went to in order to gain access to his personal life.

"This is the real story of my time in football - the good and the bad of who I am - and what really happened around me," said Gascoigne. "So much of this has never been seen before. It feels good to be telling my side of the story."

Simon Young, commissioning editor at the BBC, added: "As we head into a World Cup year, there couldn't be a timelier moment to look at this piece of our recent history.

"Paul's story is a cautionary tale about the pressure of life in the public eye, and we are privileged that he, his family and friends, and those who wrote stories about him at the time, have chosen to work with us on such a startlingly honest portrayal."

Gazza will air on BBC Two later this year.
