Eurovision 2021: The seven songs you need to listen to

Eurovision 2021: The seven songs you need to listen to
Media Mole's tips of the seven essential Eurovision entries to listen to ahead of this year's contest.

In a little over three weeks' time, Rotterdam will play host to one of the most anticipated events in the entertainment calendar: the grand final of the mighty Eurovision Song Contest.

This year some 39 countries from across Europe (and Australia, of course!) are competing to succeed the Netherlands' Duncan Laurence as Euro champ in what looks set to be a close-run race.

Here, Media Mole picks out the seven songs we believe are worthy of your ears' attention in the run-up to the event!

Elena Tsagrinou for Cyprus at Eurovision 2021

CYPRUS

Artist: Elena Tsagrinou
Song: 'El Diablo'

Two words sum this one up: Bad Romance. The Gaga "inspiration", as we'll put it, is abundant - but that doesn't stop this being an absolutely catchy-af banger. The odds are long at the moment, but add in some strong staging and this could become a contender.

Odds: 25/1

Gjon's Tears for Switzerland at Eurovision 2021

SWITZERLAND

Artist: Gjon's Tears
Song: 'Tout l'Univers'

Back for another go after 2020's contest cancellation, 22-year-old Gjon has got a real chance of following in the footsteps of Celine Dion and first ever Eurovision winner Lys Assia with this beautiful, delicate ballad.

Odds: 5/1

Dadi Freyr og Gagnamagnid for Iceland at Eurovision 2021

ICELAND

Artist: Dadi Freyr og Gagnamagnid
Song: '10 Years'

Oh, coronavirus - responsible for so much heartache, including robbing Iceland of what would have undoubtedly been their first ever Eurovision triumph in 2020. The insanely-tall Dadi Freyr and his chums Gagnamagnid are back again, but in truth '10 Years' is no 'Think About Things'.

Odds: 12/1

Destiny for Malta at Eurovision 2021

MALTA

Artist: Destiny
Song: 'Je me casse'

Former Junior Eurovision victor Destiny could make history by claiming Malta's maiden Eurovision win at this year's contest. The 18-year-old is already known to British audiences for making it through to the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals in 2017 and arrives in Rotterdam with one of the most radio-friendly songs of the crop.

Odds: 7/2

Tusse for Sweden at Eurovision 2021

SWEDEN

Artist: Tusse
Song: 'Voices'

Melodifestivalen champ Tusse serves inspiring anthem with 'Voices', a song that is sure to resonate after a year of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Odds: 16/1

Barbara Pravi for France at Eurovision 2021

FRANCE

Artist: Barbara Pravi
Song: 'Voila'

Another entrant in the empowerment space is Barbara Pravi with 'Voila' - a dramatic ballad about an insecure woman stepping out of the shadows - which could see France challenging in the upper echelons of this year's contest.

Odds: 4/1

James Newman for the UK at Eurovision 2021

UNITED KINGDOM

Artist: James Newman
Song: 'Embers'

He won't win, bless him, but our boy James Newman is giving it a real good go with 'Embers' - a dance-pop number (yes, a UK dance entry) that sounds like it's straight from the brain of David Guetta.

Odds: 100/1
