Melanie Hill has revealed that she has signed a new deal keeping her on Coronation Street as Cathy Matthews for at least another year.
In scenes to be shown next week, Cathy will make the decision to leave the cobbles as the abuse she is receiving for her online trolling grows more frightening.
Hill has moved to assure Corrie fans that Cathy is going nowhere, however, as she is under contract until at least spring 2022.
"It's a bit of a disaster for poor Cathy, she never meant to cause this much of a furore," Hill told ITV's Lorraine. "It's one of those things of basically don't drink and tweet. We've all been there.
"Things just turn really nasty and it's not a good situation for her."
She continued: "Things get quite dark quite quickly. She feels that she wants to protect the people she loves so she decides to move out.
"She might not go too far – and I've signed another contract for another year, which is brilliant. We'll see how it plays out."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
