Five people are killed as Russian forces take out a TV tower in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

Multiple TV channels have come off air in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev following an attack on a major TV tower by Russian forces.

Five people died on Tuesday in the incident, which saw the tower go up in flames after being hit by an air missile.

A nearby memorial for the Holocaust was also hit by a separate missile.

One week into Russia's invasion of the country, Kiev is bracing itself for a horrific escalation of fighting as a Russian convoy more than 40 miles in length gathers ominously on the outskirts of the city.

Targeting communications, including knocking out citizens' access to information and updates through their TVs, is a key part of Russia's invasion strategy.

Conversely, the Kremlin-backed news channel Russia Today is being taken off air across the European continent in an effort to curb Russian propaganda.
